Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in north Seattle, Washington, is currently recruiting for a middle school physical education teacher beginning in the 2020-21 school year. At Lakeside School, we are committed to academic excellence, diversity, and global citizenship.

The Lakeside Middle School Physical Education Department consists of four members who have deep expertise in their disciplines, are dedicated to collaborative, innovative teaching, and are inspired by working with a diverse population of middle school students. We have an innovative, movement-oriented curriculum which inspires student curiosity and exploration, fosters self-directed learning, utilizes alternative forms of assessment, and promotes 21st century skills.

The Middle School Physical Education teacher will teach five sections of Physical Education for students in grades five through eight. These classes encompass introducing our students to the five components of fitness, leading them through a variety of fitness-based activities, as well as incorporating fitness-based games and activities. Essential duties will include:

  1. Energetic, engaged classroom instruction.
  2. Active involvement in the school community including participation in our experiential program (service learning, outdoor program, and cultural immersion trip).
  3. Meaningful and ongoing collaboration with PE colleagues.
  4. Contributing to curriculum innovation.
  5. Serve as an advisor for 8-9 students, and
  6. Attend faculty and grade-level meetings as scheduled.
Requirements and Qualifications
  1. The successful applicant will have experience teaching Physical Education, a demonstrated appreciation for Middle-School-aged students, and at least a BA or BS in Physical Education, Exercise Science, or a related field.
  2. Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
  3. Strong communication skills and ability to build relationships with students and families.
  4. References should speak to the candidate’s eagerness and enthusiasm for working effectively with capable young people at the Middle School level, to the candidate’s ability to work harmoniously and collaboratively with adult colleagues, and to their capacity to be an innovative leader in terms of PE curriculum and program.
  5. Successful completion of two criminal history background checks.
Compensation and Benefits
Lakeside School is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding faculty candidates who will add to the racial, cultural, economic and gender diversity of our school community. This position will be compensated based on education and years of experience per the Lakeside School salary scale. Substitutes are not eligible for benefits other than FICA, workers compensation insurance and a school-provided lunch.
