Position Summary

The Valley School is seeking to fill a Part Time Librarian position reporting to the Director of Teaching and Learning.

Essential Functions

  • To develop an engaging, standards -based, library curriculum for: Pre-Kindergarten through 5th Grade and teach seven classes per week
  • To collaborate with teachers to coordinate the library program with classroom curriculum and to communicate library program in newsletters and other school publications
  • To create a warm, respectful, and productive learning environment in the library for students; to implement successful classroom management
  • To maintain ongoing relationships with local librarians and professional organizations such and WLMA, NWAIS librarians
  • To promote a friendly, positive attitude in the library for all students, faculty and families
  • To plan, organize, and implement annual events such as The Valley School Book Award
  • To maintain a library collection that serves the curricular and personal needs of a diverse school population of students and faculty and to continually manage all aspects of the library collection including appropriate weeding of dated, worn, damaged, or non-circulating items
  • To incorporate reading motivation projects into the library curriculum, whenever possible, such as the Washington Children’s Choice Picture Book Awards and the Sasquatch Awards
  • To plan and incorporate occasional visits from children’s book authors, other children’s librarians, storytellers, and illustrators
  • To maintain the cleanliness of the library and to create attractive and informative library displays
  • To present ongoing ideas for improvements to the library program
  • To incorporate information literacy skills and digital citizenship lessons into the library curriculum
  • To assess students learning and complete individual student progress reports each term
  • To update faculty and students regarding new acquisitions
  • To work with the Business Office in maintaining computer hardware, software and databases
  • To maintain the circulation system for all library materials, including check-out, card maintenance, and an accurate system of overdue notices
  • To order, catalog, and process all materials and supplies
  • To monitor the library’s annual budget
  • To process orders and bills for library and media center purchases
  • To organize and maintain periodical subscriptions
  • To train, monitor, and schedule library volunteers
  • To be willing to learn and be open to challenging new projects
  • To maintain the ability to accomplish tasks and remain flexible in spite of interruptions
  • Support the school and The Valley School leadership
  • To perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School
  • To attend all faculty meetings
  • To provide recess coverage and conference day coverage in the library

Qualifications & Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree, emphasis on early childhood and/or elementary education expertise preferred
• Librarian Certification or License

• Minimum three years of combined teaching experience in an early childhood or elementary setting

• Clear fingerprint background check

Compensation & Benefits

The Valley School offers a salary that is competitive with comparable schools in the Seattle area and is commensurate with experience and credentials. This position is not eligible for benefits.
