Located in the Arbor Heights neighborhood of West Seattle, Westside serves 330 students in preschool through eighth grade. Westside’s Middle School serves 140 students in 5th-8th grade, and is organized into two grade-level teams comprised of 5 teachers who collaborate to both implement and design meaningful curriculum.

The Middle School (7th & 8th grade) Language Arts Teacher participates in the life of the school, attending in-service days and school celebrations, and upholds the mission, vision, and values of Westside School.

Reports to: Middle School Head

Key responsibilities of this role will include:
  • Perpetuate a highly engaged student and faculty culture, characterized by high expectations and a strong sense of community.
  • Teaching two sections each of seventh and eighth grade Language Arts
  • Differentiating instruction to serve both high achievers and those needing extra support.
  • Serving as an advisor to a small group of seventh and eighth grade students.
  • Participating in outdoor excursions in both the fall and spring trimesters.
  • Attending faculty and community meetings and participating fully in the life of the school.

Successful candidates will have the following personal and professional attributes:

  • Language Arts teaching experience in the middle school grades.
  • A degree in education, literature, writing, or related field.
  • Masters Degree preferred.
  • Fluency in a variety of instructional techniques and approaches.
  • Experience in developing curriculum and differentiating instruction to serve both high achievers and those needing extra support.
  • Understanding of high school Language Arts curricula, and what it means to prepare middle schoolers to be successful in high school.
  • Compassion for the social and emotional needs of adolescents.
  • Enthusiasm for working collaboratively with colleagues including the desire to plan integrative curriculum experiences across disciplines.
  • Ability to work and communicate well with all levels of faculty and staff.
  • Ability to work and communicate well with students and their parents.
  • An expressed effort to collaborate with colleagues, accept feedback, and conduct oneself in a professional manner.
  • A positive attitude and sense of humor.
