Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for a full time (1.0 FTE) member of the upper school visual art faculty beginning in late August 2020. Visual art is a highly valued and integral component of the student experience and is part of a dynamic Arts department that includes music and drama. The visual arts team is highly collaborative, innovative, and is committed to interdisciplinary curriculum design. The current visual art curriculum includes year-long, sequential courses in 2D, 3D, and photography. We are seeking a candidate to complement the strengths of the department, and to utilize their expertise to innovate and develop new approaches.

Responsibilities
This position reports to the Director of Visual and Performing Arts and will join a highly collaborative department. Specific responsibilities for this position include:

  1. Teach four sections of visual arts based on the needs of the program, and participating in other aspects of school life including advising and clubs.
  2. Create interdisciplinary projects and new pedagogical approaches consistent with current trends in art education.
  3. Contribute to the faculty art shows and participate in planning and execution of student exhibitions.
  4. Manage all aspects of curriculum design, studio maintenance, budget, and student assessment.
Requirements and Qualifications
We are seeking a candidate who has a passion for teaching foundational skills and also has experience integrating modern media into traditional studio art practice. The ideal candidate will be an expert in 2D art forms and have some experience teaching 3D art. In addition to painting, experience and/or interest in animation, design, and interdisciplinary art making is highly desirable.
  1. Bachelor’s in Fine Art or Art Education, Master’s degree preferred;
  2. History of successful collaboration within and across departments in an educational setting.
  3. Minimum 3 years teaching experience - preferably in a high school setting.
  4. Experience and/or interest in interdisciplinary teaching, film, design, and contemporary media.
  5. Versatility to teach a variety of basic 2D and 3D art forms including ceramics and drawing & painting.
  6. Ability to manage all aspects of a visual arts classroom including maintaining art material, budget, equipment and room space.
  7. Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
  8. Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
