We seek a full-time Instrumental Music Teacher to lead a thriving and growing program with three Middle School bands, two Upper School ensembles, Drumline, Pep Band, and multiple jazz combos.

Central to the philosophy of the SAAS Instrumental Program is the belief that music is a powerful and joyful catalyst for personal growth. The Instrumental Program is open to all Middle and Upper School students and provides a year-long opportunity for musical development and expression. With jazz as the overarching program focus, students frequently work with specialist coaches, guest artists, and clinicians. All Instrumental students perform in two school concerts each year and three End-of-Trimester Performances, and the advanced ensembles travel and compete at jazz festivals including the Reno Jazz Festival where they have placed. The SAAS Drumline and Pep Band also perform at large-scale athletic events such as Fall Mania and Basketball Mania. Students also participate in monthly jam sessions at an off- campus venue.

As described below, both Middle and Upper Schools have ensembles that meet as classes during the regular school day, and combos that meet before and/or after school.

Middle School

  • 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Band classes meet by grade level during the school day.
  • The Middle School Jazz Combo meets three days a week before school.
  • Drumline meets before school once a week.

Upper School

  • Jazz Ensemble I and Jazz Ensemble II (placement by audition) meet during the school day.
  • Three Upper School jazz combos currently meet three days a week before school.
  • Drumline meets before school once a week.
  • The SAAS Pep Band is a combination of 8th Grade band, Jazz Ensemble I, and Jazz Ensemble II, and it performs at Basketball Mania.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach instrumental music ensembles, which may include some combination of 6th, 7th, or 8th grade Bands; and/or Jazz Ensemble I and Jazz Ensemble II for mixed grades 9th-12th.
  2. Supports and collaborates with other Instrumental Music faculty, Arts Department activities, and with faculty outside the Arts Department.
  3. Curricular and Extra-Curricular responsibilities. Such events typically include “End of Trimester Performances,” three instrumental performance concerts, Soccer and Basketball “Manias” (Drumline and Pep Band), Reno Jazz Festival, jam sessions, and instrumental music field trips.
  4. Coordinate and schedule specialist coaches for class instruction and leading combos, which meet before and/or after school.
  5. Submits budget needs annually in accordance with established timelines and guidelines, accounts for the use of program funds, and maintains an accurate inventory of equipment.

Preferred Experience/Proficiencies

  1. Experience and training in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to lead our Middle and Upper School instrumental music program.
  2. Instrumental proficiency, an ability to integrate a variety of instrumentation into a viable ensemble, and the ability to arrange music for instrumental ensembles.
  3. Knowledge of music software including Finale and Sibelius is highly desired.
  4. Knowledge of sound equipment set up.
  5. Masters degree and five years of teaching experience.
