Cascades Academy is an independent PK-12, day school located in the beautiful, mountain town of Bend, Oregon. The school was founded in 2003 and resides on an award­-winning 39­-acre campus located on the Deschutes River.


Cascades Academy is seeking an experienced Middle School (grades 6 - 8) Social Studies/Humanities teacher. Please note: the school is also seeking a full-time Math/Learning Support teacher and is open to considering a Math/Learning Support/Humanities position for the right, qualified candidate. Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree is required, Master's degree is preferred
  • 3-5 years experience teaching middle school social studies and/or humanities
  • A passion for teaching social studies or humanities.
  • A passion for teaching in a creative, integrated, and innovative way
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other middle school teachers
  • A commitment to experiential learning, outdoor education, and social-emotional learning
  • A desire to be part of a vibrant, “all-in” community of students, families, and faculty/staff
  • Learning Specialist experience a plus


Responsibilities:

Curriculum and Instruction:

  • Teach the equivalent of four (4) academic courses which may include Ancient World History, Modern World History, Global Geography, Social Studies, Language Arts OR Integrated Humanities courses.
  • Teach/advise a middle school club.
  • Plan and attend all major off-campus and overnight experiences:
    • Co-lead Fall Confluence/ Steelhead Week (opening week overnight)
    • Co-lead both fall and spring Traveling School trips.
    • Co-lead and execute a Spring ‘Em Course.
    • Co-Supervise weekly expeditions/ski program.
  • Provide feedback and grades to students via school LMS, and update grades on a weekly basis.
  • Communicate with parents on a regular basis regarding student performance.


Leadership and Mentorship:

  • Serve in the role of Middle School Advisor and meet with advisees on a weekly basis.
  • Help co-plan and lead traveling school trips.
  • Participate in Parent Conferences.
  • Co-facilitate one Middle School specific co-curricular program (Student Leadership, Clubs, Sports).
  • Uphold and enforce all school and MS-specific policies, procedures, and practices (e.g. phones, dress code, tardy policy, etc.).


Institutional:

  • Participate in all professional development days before, during, and after the school year.
  • Pursue and execute additional professional development throughout the school year via conferences, school visits, books, webinars, etc.
  • Attend weekly faculty and division meetings.
  • Attend school events and functions outside the normal school day, including fundraisers, presentations, board meetings, etc. (as indicated by the Head of School or Middle School Head).
  • Assist in the fulfillment of Accreditation work (as per NWAIS Accreditation Report).
  • Serve on at least one committee or professional learning community (Risk Management, Diversity, Curriculum and Instruction, etc.).
  • Other duties as assigned by the Middle School Head or Head of School.


Compensation:

This is a salaried, full-time, benefits-eligible position. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate’s background and experience and will be competitive with similar NWAIS schools.
