About Hyla Hyla Middle School is a small school of about 100 students in grades 6, 7, & 8 located on a historic farm on Bainbridge Island – just a short ferry ride across the sound from Seattle. In its 28th year, Hyla has grown to be a strong, trusted, and valued educational institution on Bainbridge Island. After years of strategic planning and research, the Hyla board of trustees has decided to take Hyla to the next phase of its development by expanding the program through high school. Hyla is in the process of recruiting a team of experienced, dynamic, and passionate high school educators to build on the strengths of Hyla Middle School and welcome our first classes of high school students to Hyla beginning in the fall of 2021. Currently, everything that happens at Hyla is centered around our deep respect for and understanding of the profound and lasting growth that happens during the middle school years – neurobiological, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and academic. We work together collaboratively to honor the unique identity, voice, and path of each child. We believe in personal development as much as academic growth, integrity as much as achievement, and challenge as much as support. We have fun, we get outside a lot, and we love our students. As we build our high school program, we will take the same close, deep look at the high school years and create an equally unique and indelible program for high school students tailored to meet the very different and specific needs of 9th – 12th graders. The Opportunity This is an exciting opportunity to be a team member of an innovative new division of a well-established school. We are seeking passionate and driven educators who are inspired by the opportunity to have a significant impact on the design and success of this program. We are looking for teachers who believe in and embody our strategic vision through their planning and practice. Human Relations, Environmental Sustainability, Global Education, and Future-Ready Skills will be meaningful woven throughout content area courses. Learning will reach beyond the campus and take advantage of our surrounding island, city, and region as the grounds for interdisciplinary and experiential learning to extend. Teacher roles will also stretch beyond classroom periods and walls as teachers lead student community, leadership, internship, and Experiential Expedition programs. You will be a member of a collaborative team who will work together to create, maintain, and continue to strengthen this intentional and synergistic high school program. Job Summary Hyla is seeking an experienced, energetic, creative, and dedicated 9th - 12th grade high school Math educator with expertise in meeting the differentiated needs of a wide-variety of students from those who benefit from explicit instruction to highly capable students. Every teacher at Hyla will work with a team of educators to build and launch a one-of-a-kind interdisciplinary and experiential high school program. Successful candidates will be passionate about working with high school students, have knowledge of current educational practices and strategies, and be able to use flexible and innovative pedagogical techniques appropriate to a variety of learning styles.
