The McGillis School, an established, independent K-8 school in Salt Lake City, Utah has an opening for a Lower School Teaching Assistant (35 hours/week), beginning Fall 2020.

The role of the teaching assistant is to provide support to students throughout the school day. Assistants will spend time working in the two classrooms that make up a grade level and will work in collaboration with both lead teachers to build a community of learners who respect and care for one another.

Reporting to the Lower School Director, the successful candidate will be expected to fully embrace and effectively convey the qualities described in McGillis’s Purpose-Mission-Values statement and Diversity statement.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the general supervision of classrooms, lunch/recess/playground, and perform duties as assigned by the classroom teachers.
  • Establish familiarity with the overall program and related resources and materials in order to assist in facilitating learning experiences with students.
  • Work with students in small groups, individually, or as a whole class.
  • Foster positive and meaningful student interactions and relationships.
  • Complete tasks assigned by lead teachers to maintain the classroom environment, materials, and documentation of student work.
  • Value and incorporate diverse perspectives in daily student interactions and within the program.
  • Attend faculty meetings and professional growth opportunities as required.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience working with preschool or elementary age children in a school setting.
  • Patience, energy, and physical stamina.
  • A willingness to learn about, reflect upon and support a dynamic learning environment.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of the children and program.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to work and communicate well with all levels of faculty and staff, students, and families.
  • Knowledge and comfort working with technology tools (iPads, Smartboards, document cameras, etc).
  • A desire to collaborate with colleagues, accept feedback, and conduct oneself in a professional manner.
  • Associates or bachelor’s degree preferred.
