The Northwest School is a college-preparatory, co-educational independent day and boarding school near the heart of downtown Seattle. We offer a rich and challenging program to roughly 450 students in grades 6 through 12, including international students, many of whom live in our campus dormitory. The Northwest School seeks full-time and part-time Humanities teachers beginning in the 2021-2022 school year.


The Humanities program in grades 9–11 combines the study of literature, history, philosophy, culture and art history in a three-year, chronological sequence. These double-credit courses meet state requirements in both English and history. Classes meet nine times each week in lectures, small-group discussions and writing conferences with three to four students. The courses are reading and writing intensive. Readings for each topic are taken from primary sources, historical scholarship and from the great literature of or about the period under study. The Humanities program develops higher-order thinking skills by asking students to synthesize concepts and facts from history and to apply them to current situations. The main tool for this exercise is writing—expository and creative—which is required after every major book, topic or idea. Personal responses and oral presentations are also a part of these courses.

Essential Functions Include:

Teach two or four sections of Humanities courses to Upper School grade students.

Develop and implement integrated Humanities curriculum.

Collaborate and actively team-teach with other Humanities teachers at the grade-level.

Coordinate curricula with other department and grade-level teachers.

Plan and teach a 2-week intensive course, known as a Summit, each year.

Advise a group of students.

Cultivate positive family partnerships.

Participate fully in the life of the school which includes collaborating effectively and collegially with a teaching team, grade-level, and department; engage regularly in formal, ongoing professional development beyond school based in- service; support colleagues and the school by substituting for absent teachers; participate in meetings, committees, and community gatherings; and know, understand, and uphold the mission, philosophy and values of the school. All teachers contribute to the school mission and community with activities such as supporting student social-emotional learning, interest groups (clubs), social events, and grade level trips.

Minimum Qualifications:

All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the school’s mission, values, and philosophy, especially related to diversity, equity, and inclusion; environmental sustainability, and global perspective.

A bachelor's degree and a minimum 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job. This includes demonstration of the ability to teach social studies, literature, grammar, and writing.

Demonstrated success with culturally responsive pedagogy.

Experience teaching a diverse student body through a social justice lens.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years teaching experience teaching in a Humanities, Social Studies and/or English Language Arts department.

Experience and interest in teaching different grade-levels and/or subject matter.

Experience developing and implementing new curriculum.

An ELL certificate or endorsement and experience working with an international student population
