The Bush School is in search of an individual to join our Business Office team as the school’s Controller. We are seeking a candidate who is able to support the school’s mission of diversity and inclusion and who has a background that demonstrates an understanding and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and intercultural fluency.

The Controller reports directly to the school’s Assistant Head for Finance and Operations (“AHFO”) while partnering in support of the school’s daily financial operations, as well as monitoring and accounting for financial transactions at The Bush School.

While other duties may be assigned, a qualified candidate will be able to manage the key responsibilities listed below:

  • Oversee financial and tax reporting in alignment with applicable standards
  • Lead the preparation of the annual budget with the AHFO
  • Maintain a system of internal controls
  • Lead the preparation of the annual audit and coordinate with the school’s auditors
  • Serve as a member of the school’s Finance Committee
  • Collaborate with internal and external constituencies, e.g. Board, auditors, head of school, Development Team
  • Ensure the school complies with all local, state and federal reporting requirements
  • Monitor financial obligations of the school
  • Coordinate with the school’s outside legal counsel regarding matters related to the responsibilities of this position

Professional Competencies and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field (required)
  • At least 5 years of experience in accounting (required)
  • Experience with the lifecycle of financial audits from initial preparation phase through final reporting phase (required)
  • An active Washington State CPA license that is in good standing (preferred)
  • Experience with non-profit accounting (preferred)
  • Management of staff/teams and/or finance-based initiatives (preferred)
  • Experience working in a school setting (preferred)

  • Communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) with others, to include administrators, board members, colleagues, faculty/staff, parents/guardians, financial institutions and vendors
  • Collaborate openly, honestly, and respectfully with internal and external constituencies
  • Complete work in a timely and thorough manner while conscientious about responsibilities and deadlines
  • Be organized and detail oriented
  • Be flexible and have the ability to work collaboratively and collegially with others
  • Have fluency in the use of technology, including: Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, Outlook and Financial Management Database Platforms
