Long-Term Substitute at 1.0 FTE for part of the 2021-22 Academic School Year

The Bush School is in search of an individual to join our Upper School team as a Long Term Substitute Faculty Member to teach Physical Education. We are seeking a candidate who will support the school’s mission of diversity and inclusion and who has a background that demonstrates an understanding and appreciation of intercultural fluency.

The Long Term Substitute Faculty Member reports to the Upper School Division Director and works closely with students and families, as well as the Upper School Faculty/Staff and Physical Education Department. This position will be responsible for teaching four sections of physical education, leading an Advisory and working a spring Cascade program.

While other duties may be assigned, a qualified candidate will be able to manage the key responsibilities and tasks listed below:

  • Create and sustain a positive classroom culture, based on the mission and values of the school
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences
  • Possess the ability and skills to successfully teach physical education to 9th-12th grade students
  • Value and incorporate diverse perspectives into daily student interactions and within the curriculum
  • Establish classroom expectations that create a safe and comfortable environment for all
  • Collaborate and work effectively with the school’s Physical Education Department
  • Create and sustain effective family partnerships, for example: communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress and classroom news via formal spring conferences, written communications, and the school’s portal.
  • Observe/evaluate/assess students’ development and maintain accurate records regarding student progress and areas of growth.
  • Attend school related events outside the scheduled school day
  • Participate actively and with curiosity in school/division/department meetings, in addition to activities/committees
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of students in Advisory.
  • Enrich or modify lessons, curriculum, materials and resources as needed to meet differentiated student needs and varying levels of progress inside and outside of the classroom
  • Collaborate with school counselors and learning specialists to establish and maintain social-emotional learning and wellness for all students
  • Communicate openly, timely and supportively with students, staff, parents and other stakeholders regarding student achievement and progress
  • Utilize technology to support student success (e.g. Google Docs)

Experience and Professional Competencies:

  • Experience teaching physical education is required, with 3 or more years preferred
  • A bachelor’s degree is required
  • A graduate degree is preferred

  • Communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) with others, including administrators, colleagues, staff and parents/guardians in order to maintain constructive and professional relationships.

  • Be patient and positive and find joy in the journey of promoting a lifelong love of learning.
  • Have proficient skills in the use of technology: including, but not limited to, Microsoft Suite, Google Drive, and Outlook.
