Our summer program is currently recruiting for a Computer Science II and III teacher. Lakeside Summer School offers for-credit and skill-building courses for students entering grades 9-12. These courses, which are often taken in succession, introduce students to computer programming through the Java language. These courses are structured around a series of projects that teach the principles and techniques of software engineering, culminating in an independent project which is presented to the class at the end of each course. Taking both courses prepares students for success on the AP Computer Science Exam in May. Computer Science II covers a semester’s worth of material, including elementary algorithms, data types, flow of control, user input, file input/output, recursion and some graphical applications using procedural programming techniques. Computer Science III covers object-oriented programming and inheritance in Java, more advanced data structures (lists, stacks, queues, trees), and the efficiency and complexity algorithms (particularly searching, sorting). These are graded courses, and students will earn one half year of credit (semester) for each course. There will be about three hours of homework assigned each day. The position will be part time. The class will run June 24 – August 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with one hour of designated office hours every afternoon. No classes will be offered on July 4. There will also be a mandatory orientation on Thursday, June 20.

Responsibilities

  1. Create the curriculum for this course.
  2. Create organized and engaging lesson plans for each day.
  3. Supervise and instruct students during class time.
  4. Provide individual support to students needing additional instruction.
  5. Provide written comments at the end of the course for each student.

Requirements and Qualifications
  1. A bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree in computer science or a related field preferred.
  2. Teaching experience with high-school level students.
  3. Experience with curriculum development.
  4. Experience in working with a wide range of learning styles.
  5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  6. Strong organizational skills.
  7. Positive and collaborative attitude.
  8. Sense of humor and enthusiasm.
  9. Cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions and an ability to communicate with people from cultures different than their own.
  10. Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
Compensation
The stipend for this position is $8,000. Lunch is included. The course will only run if enough students register. Enrollment will remain open until June 1. If the number of students enrolled is too small on June 1, the course will not run, and, therefore, the stipend will not be paid.
