Cascades Academy is an independent PK-12 day school with 200 students located in the beautiful mountain town of Bend, Oregon. The school was founded in 2003 and resides on an award-winning 21-acre campus located on the Deschutes River. The school’s unique mission weaves challenging academics with experiential learning and actively cultivates a nurturing and inclusive school community.

Cascades Academy is seeking a qualified professional to join the team as Lower School Head for the 2019-20 school year.

Position Summary:

Position Title: Lower School Division Head

Reports to: Head of School

Start Date: July 1, 2019

The Lower School Head is responsible for the faculty, curriculum, program, and student growth of grades pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The Lower School Head works collaboratively with the other division heads and Head of School and understands the importance of the whole school’s needs, initiatives, and philosophy.

Essential Duties:

  • Serve as the spokesperson for the philosophy, pedagogy, and mission of both the Lower School and Cascades Academy as a whole
  • Work with the Director of Curriculum to oversee the development of the curriculum and the articulation of academic goals within the division; work with the other Division Heads to coordinate and ensure continuity of curriculum between divisions; ensure that the curriculum of the division supports the mission of Cascades Academy
  • Ensure the smooth running of the day-to-day operations of the division including communication with families, students, teachers, and staff
  • Oversee the social-emotional development of students within the division
  • Coordinate academic and social/emotional support for lower school students
  • Provide small-group teaching as assigned
  • Oversee teaching assignments and scheduling within the division; identify teaching needs and to assist the Head of School in the hiring process
  • Oversee lower school faculty evaluation, instructional coaching and professional development
  • Maintain a positive professional divisional culture
  • Interview prospective lower school families and work with the office of admission to enroll new lower school students
  • Coordinate the licensing and training requirements for the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten programs
  • Assist the Head of School, as requested, with projects and needs of the school

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Lower School Head is directly responsible for the supervision and professional development of the lower school faculty.

  • Knowledge of lower school curriculum and experiential education

  • Knowledge of social-emotional curriculum
  • Knowledge of innovation and technology approaches in elementary education
  • A commitment to the "whole child" through age-appropriate, child-centered, experiential learning

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Lower school teaching experience required
  • Experience as lower school head preferred
