Cascades Academy is an independent PK-12 day school with about 200 students located in the beautiful mountain town of Bend, Oregon. The school was founded in 2003 and resides on an award-winning 21-acre campus located on the Deschutes River. The school’s unique mission weaves challenging academics with experiential learning and actively cultivates a nurturing and inclusive school community.

The school is seeking one full-time Second Grade Teacher for the 2019-20 school year. This is a one-year position.

Position Title: Second Grade Teacher

Reports to: Lower School Head

Start Date: August 22, 2019

Responsibilities Include:

Curriculum and Instruction:

  • Collaborate with colleagues to implement second-grade curriculum
  • Design curriculum allowing children to build on prior knowledge, experience, and interests
  • Maintain a warm, nurturing child-centered environment
  • Cultivate an enthusiasm for teaching and learning
  • Co-plan and co-lead social-emotional programming and community gatherings for K-5th on a rotating basis
  • Communicate with families on a regular basis regarding program via weekly newsletters, monthly blogs, etc.


  • Provide feedback and written grade reports to families via twice-yearly grade reports
  • Lead two family/teacher conferences per year
  • Plan and attend a four-day, three-night traveling school in the spring
  • Plan and attend one overnight at school
  • Supervise all winter ski-program days (5 days/winter)
  • Supervise duties as assigned (recess, lunch)


  • Participate in all professional development days before, during, and after the school year
  • Pursue and execute additional professional development throughout the school year via conferences, school visits, books, webinars, etc.
  • Attend weekly faculty and division meetings
  • Attend school events and functions outside the normal school day, including fundraisers, presentations, board meetings, etc. (as indicated by the Head of School or Lower School Head)
  • Serve on at least one committee or PLC (professional learning community)
  • Other duties as assigned by the Lower School Head or Head of School


  • Bachelor's degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • 3-5 years experience with elementary aged children
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other teachers and staff
  • A commitment to the "whole child" through age-appropriate, child-centered, experiential learning
