Posted 01/29/2020 10:55AM

Sammamish, Wash., January 28, 2020 – Eastside Catholic School is proud to announce that current Middle School Humanities Teacher Leslie Harris-Johnston has accepted an additional role of director of equity and social action. Ms. Harris-Johnston is the first director of equity and social action at Eastside Catholic.

“I am extremely excited to take on the additional role as the Director of Equity and Social Action,” Leslie Harris-Johnston said. “The position is new to Eastside Catholic, so I am honored to be the first in the role. My goal is to ground my work in the ideas expressed in the following quote: ‘Equality is giving everyone a shoe; equity is giving everyone a shoe that fits.’ In my first year, I plan to dedicate significant attention to meeting with all Eastside Catholic School constituents and collecting data to identify, develop, model and further promote a culture of equity and social action.”

In this role, Ms. Harris-Johnston will act as a resource, guide and strategic planner to help Eastside Catholic continue to grow as an inclusive school community that values a diversity of perspectives, traditions, ideas and contributions. Leslie will work with administration, faculty and student leaders to ensure the philosophies of diversity, equity, social justice and inclusion are integrated throughout the curriculum and community.

“We are fortunate to work with a passionate, experienced educator like Leslie to help guide us in this important initiative,” Director of Curriculum and Instruction Ryan Aiello said. “This role is the realization of a long-time goal at EC, and it reflects our ongoing commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity.”

Ms. Harris-Johnston joined the Eastside Catholic faculty at the beginning of the 2019-20 school year. She earned her master’s degree from New York University and her bachelor’s degree from Mount Vernon College. She is currently working on her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Saybrook University.

Prior to teaching at Eastside Catholic, Ms. Harris-Johnston was an instructional coach at The Overlake School in Redmond. She moved to the Seattle area in 2018 after working at Maharishi University of Management in Iowa for four years. Prior to that, Ms. Harris-Johnston lived in Jacksonville, Florida where she was born and primarily raised. In Florida, she worked in a variety of education roles, including a secondary English teacher, an English and humanities college professor, a co-founder and co-principal of a school and an instructional coach.
